How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

Reduce image file size with smart resizing, WebP, AVIF, PNG optimization, JPG settings, and clean export workflows.

You can compress images without visible quality loss by choosing the right format, resizing to the correct dimensions, and using sensible compression settings. The important distinction is lossless quality versus visually lossless quality.

Lossless compression preserves the original image data. It is best for screenshots, logos, diagrams, and graphics with small text or hard edges. PNG, lossless WebP, and lossless AVIF can all be useful here.

Visually lossless compression may technically change the file, but the result still looks the same in normal use. This is the right goal for most website photos because it can reduce file size much more aggressively.

Resize before compressing. If a blog layout displays an image at 1200 pixels wide, uploading a 4000 pixel camera original wastes bandwidth even if the browser scales it down on screen.

Choose the format based on the content. Use WebP or AVIF for website photos, JPG for maximum compatibility, PNG or lossless WebP for screenshots, and SVG for logos or icons when vector output is possible.

Avoid repeatedly saving lossy files. Keep a high-quality original, export the final compressed version once, and compare the result at the actual display size before publishing.
